Student Involvement:

Student involvement is central to the success of the Cardiovascular Psychophysiology Laboratory.

Undergraduate Student Accomplishments:

Many undergraduates receive research training for their participation in the Cardiovascular Psychophysiology Laboratory (and course credit is available). Two students have also completed honor's theses. We have had students accepted to graduate school in clinical psychology (e.g., U. Kentucky), Law (Case Western Reserve University) and education (KSU). Although rare, some students have received authorship credit for projects on which they took a leading role. For example, two undergraduate students have submitted first authored manuscripts for publication.

If you are interested in research training in the Cardiovascular Psychophysiology Laboratory, periodically we have openings for qualified students. Feel free to contact Dr. Hughes at jhughes1@kent.edu.

Graduate Student Accomplishments:

Students working with Dr. Hughes have completed Theses and Dissertations, have had their contributions recognized with authorship on conference presentations (posters and paper presentations), have been co-authors on manuscripts, have presented first-authored posters and papers at conferences, and have submitted first-authored manuscripts for publication. Graduate students in the lab have received travel support from Research and Graduate Studies at KSU and from the Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Research Institute at Summa Health System.

Graduate students have assisted on research projects funded by the Ohio Board of Regents and the Psychology Departments' Applied Psychology Center, and have also conducted self-initiated research projects at Summa Health System. Students benefit from their participation in Summa's Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Research Institute and their access to the Kent-Summa Center for the Treatment and Study of Traumatic Stress. When working on a specific project, they share office space at Akron City Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital. They also share dedicated office space in the laboratory in Kent Hall, where there are adequate computing resources for their research. Graduate students have also helped to train and supervise undergraduate researchers in the laboratory in Kent Hall. As Dr. Hughes' first few graduate students finish their education at Kent State University, it is expected that they will be competitive for clinical internships, postdoctoral fellowships, and academic appointments.

Dr. Hughes reviews applications for graduate study every year, although the number of students accepted varies. If you are interested in graduate study in Psychology at Kent State University, more information is available at http://dept.kent.edu/psychology/gradprograms/index.htm.
